Welcome

Good morning and welcome to my new blog, Living Without Boundaries!

My name is Melita Jones, and I am currently a School Attendance Officer for a high-performing School District in Southern Mississippi.

I am originally from Denver, Colorado, and grew up with the Rocky Mountains as my playground! I was an avid reader, a gifted student, and an optimistic adolescent with fearless dreams for my future. While in Denver, I participated in the NAACP Youth Branch, graduated from the African American Leadership Institute, and spent much of my time submerged in a world of academia.

I found my way to Mississippi after having lived in Denver, Colorado for my entire life; with the exception of a brief relocation to attend college. I attended Millikin University in Decatur, Illinois, as well as Regis University in Denver, Colorado, where I studied Communication Studies, Mass Communication and Corporate Communication.

Initially, my goal was to obtain a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism. After turning down a full scholarship to Howard University (my dream school), I found myself at the beloved Millikin, a small private university in midwest Illinois with only about 2,500 students.

Millikin did not offer Journalism as a degree program; therefore, I chose Communication, which would allow me to utilize creative writing in areas such as Public Relations, Marketing, and Advertising, while also providing a healthy amount of Mass Communication experience. While at Millikin, I fostered my love for writing with a number of Literature courses, combined with hours of report writing, research, and presentation development. I was excited at the opportunity to become a late-night radio personality and programmer for 89.5 WJMU, Millikin's student radio station. In this capacity I developed a deeper interest in Advertising, and constructed a number of radio advertising pieces, aside from my Advanced Advertising and Public Relations courses.

Throughout my journey at Millikin, I encountered quite a few enriching experiences, including the opportunity to volunteer as a mentor and tutor for Youth With A Positive Direction, a religious-based nonprofit organization; and opportunities to work with the Alumni Development Department, Registrar's Office and Financial Aid/Student Services Departments. I enjoyed memberships with the Black Student Union, Multicultural Student Council, Sister Circle, and the Latino-American Student Organization.

My passion, is writing. Over the years, I have perfected my writing style through personal and professional experiences, while simultaneously studying, working and seeing the world. I love to travel and experience new cultures; one of my strongest attributes is the lens in which I view the world: diversity is a truly beautiful and essential thing.

I established MJ Business Concepts to illuminate the world around me using fresh innovation and highly efficient techniques to assist other with the creation, development, and preservation of their dreams.
